Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Symbols
Name: Kelsey Yamane Title: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Symbols
Grade: 2 Duration: 15 minutes
Materials:
**The image above is what I used to demonstrate what a symbol is and how the students are to construct their own symbol for one of the 3 R's. I decided not to make a sample for one of the 3 R's because I wanted to avoid copying and encourage students to be original.
STANDARDS/BENCHMARKS
Strand: Physical, Earth, and Space Sciences
SC.2.8.2 Identify the limited supply of natural resources and how they can be extended through conservation, reuse, and recycling.
Strand: Visual Arts
FA.2.1.1: Use the element of space and the principles of repetition and variety, with a variety of art media.
ASSESSMENT TASKS
Students will be able to create a symbol to represent one of the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle).
LESSON SEQUENCE
Follow RRR lesson (which includes listing 1 way to reduce, reuse, and recycle at home and/or at school). RRR lesson introduces concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Intro activity: (3-5 minutes)
Using keynote, show images of different symbols and have students try to guess what the symbol is representing.
Provide directions for activity:
T: You will be creating your own symbol to represent one of the 3 R’s. You will be working with a partner. Remember that you want people to see your symbol and know right away that it represents reduce, reuse, or recycle. I want you to try and use up all of the space on your paper. Do you think people will enjoy looking at your symbol if all of your beautiful artwork is scrunched up in one little corner? Make sure that you keep this mind. Also, think about creating a nice background for your symbol instead of leaving it white. You could use different colors or patterns to make your symbol really stand out!
Draw your symbol in pencil first. Raise your hand and I will check it. Then you may use markers, crayons, and colored pencils to color your symbol. Make sure both of your names are on it!
Activity Time: (10-15 minutes)
Hang each symbol under the appropriate sign by taping one end of the ribbon to the symbol and the other to the back side of the sign. Display all reduce, reuse, and recycle signs with symbols outside of the classroom for the students to look at the next morning before they come into the class (and for other students and parents to see).

Activity Time: (10-15 minutes)
- Have students work in pairs to create a symbol for one of the 3 R’s.
- Students may choose their own partner or may be assigned a partner (their choice). I will let you choose your own partner as long as you can work nicely together. If you want me to assign you a partner come to the floor.
- Students will pick from a box to decide which of the 3 R’s they will be creating a symbol for. Once you have your partner, pick a slip from this box without looking. That will be the one you are to create a symbol for. Grab a paper and get to work.
- Make sure they draw in pencil first, write the name of their symbol (reduce, reuse, or recycle), and include their names. Check their sketch before they color.
- Let students work for the next 10-13 minutes
- Have students clean up area
