Who am I as a Visual Artist and How the Arts are a Part of My Life
One thing that I really enjoy doing is dealing with crafts. I like working with different patters, shapes, lines, and color combinations. Being able to coordinate the different patterns and colors to create a cute product is always fun to me.
During elementary, art was taught through different projects. We made little bowls out of clay, created our own calendar with photos of our family and decorating it, did some sort of weaving using yarn, macaroni art, etc. One teacher instructed us to color using circular motions, another taught us how to use a paintbrush, and how to section out our paper to make accurate portraits. In high school, I took a digital photography class that taught us about the rule of thirds, lighting, and the best times to shoot photos (sunlight).
One goal of mine is to become comfortable using different art techniques and materials or tools. In order to teach and integrate the arts, I have to be confident in using a variety of materials and styles. Another goal of mine is to work on my creativity and embrace the outcome, even if it is not the best. Lastly, I want to gain enough experience and knowledge in the arts in order to generate effective integrated lessons (other than coloring and drawing).
I believe that as long as I participate and engage in the activities that we do in class, I will gain enough exposure to different techniques and materials as well as unique ideas on how to include arts in the classroom. Also, I plan on working hard and taking my time to come up with original ideas that I can be proud of. Since I want my students to know that as long as they give it their best they should love the things that they produce, I should do the same.

Artifact #1: Scrapbook
I began scrapbooking in intermediate and continued on through high school. My mom would help me create the binder, covering it with some padding, fabric, and ribbon. I would take pictures that I had printed and create a page using different types of paper, stickers, pens, cut-outs, stencils, etc.
Scrapbooking was something that I loved to do. It would take me a long time to create just a few pages, but I was always proud of the pages I created. I would constantly try to come up with different designs or patterns playing with different angles, colors, lines, shapes, etc. It was my way of showcasing the memories I had growing up.
I believe that my scrapbooks show my interest in crafts and my preference for working with colors, shapes, patterns, and lines. The arts, in this sense, was a big part of my life and was considered to be my hobby. My sister was the one who got me into it and the rest of my family definitely supported us in this hobby.

Artifact #2: Pochacco Art Supply Kit
This is my Pochacco art supply kit that my parents bought for me when I was a child. It contains white paper, stamps, colored pencils, crayons, paint, markers, and a few other supplies. It is quite big in size but can can be closed and carried around by a handle.
I chose this item because I loved to draw when I was younger. I remember being very excited when I received this gift because I would draw quite often after school and whenever I was bored. I remember making a lot of paintings and drawings at my grandma’s house on the days she picked me up from school. When I got a bit older, I used to like to look at something and try to draw it. I love color and when my sister (who was in high school at the time) began drawing bubble letters, I used to try and make mines look like hers.
This artifact shows that drawing and coloring was a part of my life growing up. It was something that I liked to do during my free time. I was not the best at it but I still enjoy doodling and looking at images to draw something (especially cute animals and stick figures) to this day.

Artifact #3: Decorated Notebooks
These are my notebooks that I have decorated for this year’s classes. I used different types of scrapbook paper, stickers, clipart, and fonts to design these covers. I got the idea to do this from Pinterest and went to work on my own creation.
Although this is something that I have done recently, this item shows my love for this type of art. I used to enjoy decorating my textbooks in elementary school. I love working with anything that resembles scrapbooking, even if it takes some time. Going to Ben Franklin and Target to buy scrapbook paper and stickers makes me very happy and excited. It’s just one of those things that truly interests me and that I have a passion for.
My notebooks show how my love for scrapbooking in my earlier years has stayed with me until now. Exploring this craft growing up has definitely helped me learn the types of designs, layouts, colors, etc. that I like and helped me to be more creative.
