Name: Kelsey Yamane
Title: Communities, Neighborhoods, Man-Made vs. Natural: Our Building’s Neighborhood Artwork
Grade: 2 Duration: 2 days, each 45 minutes
Materials:
2.7.1 Human and Physical Characteristics in Spatial Terms
Identify and explain the human (man-made) and physical (natural) characteristics of a neighborhood or the community
ASSESSMENT TASKS
Students will create at least 3 man-made things and 3 natural things they sketched after a walk around our classroom neighborhood using man-made materials and natural materials respectively.
ELL/SPED: Students will create at least 2 man-made things and 2 natural things they sketched after a walk around our classroom neighborhood using man-made materials and natural materials respectively.
LESSON SEQUENCE
Use keynote to go over topic. Have students make 4 groups.
Day 1
Materials to prep:
Intro: 15 minutes
Slide 1: Today we will be briefly studying communities and neighborhoods and will learn about man-made versus natural things. We will be studying this over the next two days and will be doing a fun project.
Slide 2: Have students think about and provide some things in their Hickam community and neighborhood.
-What are some of the things that are a part of Hickam?
-When I drive to school everyday, I always pass Burger King and a pool. There’s also this place where you can buy groceries....what is it called?
-Who do you consider to be your neighbors?
-What is the difference between a community and a neighborhood?
(Community: pool, gym, stores, bank, mall, etc.; different neighborhoods can make up a community
Neighborhood: the immediate area surrounding you; homes)
Record what they say on chart paper: man-made things on left and natural elements on right (d not mention why you are separating them yet).
Slide 3: Continue to add on to list of man-made and natural things.
Slide 4: Let them pair share and then hold class discussion. Talk about how things on left are made by people and things on right are natural, grow on Earth.
-Think about what they are made of/how they are made.
Slide 5: More examples of man-made and natural things.
Slide 6: Go over directions using keynote. Have students at their tables to sort pictures and review as a class by calling on volunteers to share one picture and where they placed it.
Slide 7: Have students pair share about images. *Sometimes things can be both man-made and natural.
Slide 8: Introduce idea as our classroom being a “home” and discuss what would be a part of our neighborhood.
-If we think of Hickam Elementary School as our community and our classroom our home, who would be our neighbors?
-So our neighborhood would be this building: or K building.
Exploring: 25 minutes
Slide 9: Today you are going to be an artist! As an artist, you are going to explore our neighborhood and sketch 4 man-made and 4 natural things that you see. We are going to be making 4 stops around our building to give you different things to look at and draw. But before we begin, we must set up our notebook. Please take out your learning log and turn to a blank page. This is how we are going to set up our notebook:
-Fold page in half hot dog style
-Write “Man-made” on left and “Natural” on right. Underline it.
-About midway on your page, draw another line going left to right
-Do the same on the back side of your paper
At each stop, make sure you draw at least 1 man-made and 1 natural thing. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT DRAW THE SAME IMAGE AT EACH STOP.
Closing: 5 minutes
Slide 10: Now that you have sketched at least 4 man-made things and 4 natural things, I will give you a few minutes to share it with your neighbor.
(To class) Let’s hear what you drew! Raise your hand and tell me one thing that you drew and whether it is man-made or natural.
(see if anyone has something that is both man-made and natural)
On this index card, tell me what man-made things are and what natural things are.
Write on board:
“Man-made things are....”
“Natural things are...”
Make sure you have your name, number, and date.
Please put your journal in your desk because tomorrow we will be doing a fun art project using your drawings!
Day 2:
Materials to prep:
Intro: 15 minutes
Slide 13: Hold discussion on what students noticed and inform that this is art made from everyday materials.
Slide 14: Same as above. Then go back and forth between slide 13 and 14 to compare and contrast type of materials used.
*Review: slide 13 is art made from everyday materials, slide 14 is art made from things found in our environment/nature.
T: Yesterday we learned about man-made things and natural things. Can someone tell me what man-made things are? Natural things? How do you think that this relates to these pieces of artwork? (Slide 13 is created by using man-made things and slide 14 is created by using natural things)
Slide 15: Today you are going to create your own piece of artwork! We are going to use the artist’s techniques of using everyday materials and nature to create our own pieces of art. In order to do this, you will need your sketches from yesterday’s walk around the building. Who can tell me what we did on our walk? Using those drawings, you will recreate it using man-made materials and natural materials. However, you only need to recreate 3 instead of all 4 things for each category.
Slide 16: Here are some examples of man-made and natural materials that are available to use.
Slide 17: Show image of sketches and final product. Explain how it was recreated.
Slide 18: Review directions. Materials will be in the front of the classroom. You will use tofu containers to take your materials. Please just take what you need because you can always come back for more if you need to. We need to make sure that there is enough for everyone to use.
*ELL/SPED: must include at least 2 man-made and 2 natural elements instead of 3 of each.
Play background music while working.
At end of project: 5 minutes
Clean up

Slide 17: Show image of sketches and final product. Explain how it was recreated.
- These are the things I drew
- I think I want to use these drawings to make my artwork
- In order to make the railing, I could use straws and pipe cleaners because it is nice and straight and reminds me of what the railing looks like.
Slide 18: Review directions. Materials will be in the front of the classroom. You will use tofu containers to take your materials. Please just take what you need because you can always come back for more if you need to. We need to make sure that there is enough for everyone to use.
- Have everyone take out their learning logs and open drawings
- Have them silently decide on which things they will recreate
- When ready, raise hand and get a paper and tofu container of materials.
- When you get your paper, fold it in half, draw line down middle, and write “Man-made” on left and “Natural” on right. Write name on back of paper.
*ELL/SPED: must include at least 2 man-made and 2 natural elements instead of 3 of each.
